No "cold" jokes here, just a few photos
Want to sit by the sea? On this day of sub-zero temperatures, these charming little seats were empty
But a certain cabin fever-plagued scooter rider just had to get out for the first time in the new year
And at Higgin's Beach, a solitary surfer had a whole lot of the Atlantic Ocean all to himself
Finally, a choice must be made. One kid accepts the reality that not even Maine's famous Bean Boots will keep feet from freezing, while the other two seem ready to challenge Nature.
One pair of feet will be dry, two pairs will experience what we call "wicked cold wah-ta"
Thomas:
ReplyDeleteWah-Ta ! Now you're talkin my language. Bah Hah Bah, see . . I still remember. Hope you are doing well.
What ! no frozen sand this year ?
Happy New Year to you and Kathy

Riding the Wet Coast
Bob,
ReplyDeleteYup - all is well but all is very cold and snowy. And of course the transplants to Maine complain about it all!
"Move back to Massholeland," I say. This is Maine - cold, snowy, with a week of warmth in July, and they will never understand, nor will they ever fit in! (we won't let 'em, dammit!)
Tom
Love that first picture. So serene, but so chilly looking.
ReplyDeleteWicked cold indeed.
Trobairitz,
DeleteThank you - serene is in the heart of the beholder. But if the blood in said heart freezes, snap the photo and run.
Tom
Beautiful photos, especially the third one with the waves.
ReplyDeleteRichard,
DeleteI thank you and am glad you liked the pics. I'd planned to take a lot more, but, although I am hearty, when my knees freeze, I race home to a hot shower and a warm bed.
Tom
Tom, Mainers are a hearty bunch. Gotta wonder about that surfer though. There's hearty, and then there's that guy.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few kite surfers out on Lake St-Louis in Montreal in late December before the ice takes hold. 10F and these guys are out there because there are stiff winds whipping the lake into frosty white caps.
And then there are the crazy scooterists (sorry Tom), like you, and Keith and Steve.
I'm a tenderfoot from the Hiber nation.
Nice pics!
David,
DeleteI think that when people take to the dangerous road on a pair of 12 inch tires, 'crazy' is the word that must be applied.
Of course, the sanity of those who ride those same two wheels on sand must be questioned,
On the bright side, it's an obituary that won't be forgotten: Fat scooter rider drowns when Vespa swept out to sea. Mourners at funeral were heard to say, "What the hell was he doing in the surf?"
Tom
My mind plays tricks.......I see that lovely Vespa and the photo suddenly looks 30 degrees warmer, though I'm sure those were precious degrees that you would have gladly taken.
ReplyDeleteLove the wah tah shots Tom!
Thanks, Coop. Remember, in just a few months, the water temp will climb all the way up to 40 degrees, and touching it won't automatically lead to frostbite.
DeleteTom
Little slow here…
ReplyDeleteDoes Wah ta = water
and
Bah hah bah = Bar Harbor?
I fell like I'm from another world...
Yes and Yes
DeleteSurfer dude, "That's one crazy scooter guy!"
ReplyDeleteScooter guy, "That's some kind of maniac on the surfboard!"
Rest of Us, "Gotta check out this blog post from Maine - they're all nuts down there!"
GET IN FROM THE COLD - but loving every snap you show just the same. Glad there's no sinking scooters this time. Keep us posted.
VS lady,
ReplyDeleteWe are not all nuts - there's a guy up near Bangor who is certified as fully sane, and I heard that there is a lady in Wamawamamoosekeg who's really silly but completely sane!
Tom (semi-sane, usually)
beautiful photos.... I personally liked the photo with children skiing on the ice....bingo....
ReplyDeleteBaseball! Soon!!!
ReplyDeleteDid I mention it will soon be Baseball Season?
I thought so.
Keith,
DeleteBaseball indeed! I am watching my third game of the day, and of course I was up at 4 am for the opener in Australia. Unfortunately, I slipped back into sleep...
And I got my press pass for the Portland Sea Dogs - 12 years in a row I have been able to cover the Red Sox Double A team for the publisher of 7 weekly newspapers!
My guys look good again, and it wouldn't surprise me to see your guys again in late October.
Tom
all photos are simply superb. good post. enjoyed a lot.
ReplyDeleteWe miss you!
ReplyDeleteWhy aren't you blogging?
Are you ok?
I got your email and I am so sorry you have having difficulty!
ReplyDeleteI hope things get resolved for you. Maybe a temporary "trike kit" on the scoot? Is that an option?
Sure do miss your posts and fantastic photographs!
You and Mike are "something else" together...say hi to him too!
Hope all gets better soon!
I check in occasionally to see what the Maine coast looks like and figured something was up since your posting dropped off. Hope things are moving in a good direction for you.
ReplyDeleteI may find myself in Maine during November -- perhaps I'll see your Vespa along the sea!
Steve Williams
Scooter in the Sticks
Steve,
DeleteWhen and where in November - I will be around, waiting for Spring Training to begin - winter is very hard for baseball fans.
Tom
Tom-
ReplyDeleteLet us know how you are doing....:=)
Deb,
DeleteIn a word: Better
Thank you for asking
Tom
